Design Comparison Using Risk Based Inspection (RBI)

When designing a new plant, it is important to consider the costs associated with the day-to-day operations of each unit, and not just initial purchase cost (i.e., the cost of the asset). The low initial cost of a unit might be offset by a high maintenance cost or an even higher expected risk cost (i.e., additional costs associated with the chance of failure). When multiple designs are available as possible choices, the comparison of the designs must consider all costs based on each design's predicted performance throughout the life cycle in order to determine the best design for the particular environment. The example given in this article, based on the analysis provided in API RP 581, showcases the ability to compare designs of heat exchanger tube bundles using ReliaSoft's RBI software. A similar methodology can also be used for other pressurized components.

ReliaSoft Representation at ASTR Workshop

ReliaSoft's Senior Director of DFR Strategy & Planning, Dr. Julio Pulido, will be presenting at this year's 2014 Accelerated Stress Testing & Reliability (ASTR) Workshop, September 10-12, 2014 in St. Paul, MN. His presentation is titled "Competing Failure Mode Analysis of Test Data." We are also proud to announce that the International Applied Reliability Symposium is a Technical Partner to the event, due to a shared interest in growing reliability-related knowledge. If you were unable to attend this year's Applied Reliability Symposium in Indianapolis, you may be pleased to learn that printed and *.pdf versions of the 2014 proceedings are available for purchase online.

Calling for Presentation Proposals!

The Applied Reliability Symposium comes to Europe only once a year — don't miss your opportunity to be a presenter in Amsterdam, Netherlands in April 2015! The ARS Europe proposal deadline is October 30, 2014. Presentation topics should be based on practical reliability and quality engineering practices derived from real-life experience. The primary author for each presentation delivered at the Symposium will receive complimentary registration to the event and the opportunity to win one of the Excellent Presentation Awards. For additional information and to download the submission form, please visit the ARS Europe website at
