Discussion of Maximum Likelihood Estimation for the 3-Parameter Weibull Distribution

The 2-parameter Weibull distribution has been widely used in reliability engineering. Because it is so popular, sometimes people refer to life data analysis as Weibull analysis. The 3-parameter Weibull distribution is also occasionally used if there is a failure-free time period. However, estimation of the location parameter and its confidence bounds has been a difficult issue, with many published papers on the topic. In this article, we will review some of the issues in estimating the parameters of the 3-parameter Weibull distribution.

Congratulations to the Top Presenters at ARS North America

The recipients of the Excellent Presentation Awards from the Applied Reliability Symposium in Minneapolis last week were selected based on votes cast by Symposium attendees. Congratulations to the following presenters:

  • 1st Place (Gold) – Georgios Sarakakis of Tesla Motors, for his presentation on "Exploring a Scalable Field Reliability Management System: Roles, Tools and Processes to Support 2,500% Fielded Product Growth." This award was donated to The Accelerated Cure Project.
  • 2nd Place (Silver) – Stan Stephenson of Halliburton for his presentation on "Relianomics: Changing the Mindset and Units of Measure for Reliability"
  • 3rd Place (Bronze) – John Gebhard of Rolls-Royce for his presentation on "Integrated FMEAs – A Key to Organizational Efficiency"

This year’s event was a great success thanks to the captivating presentations from a variety of industries across the country. See you next year at ARS in Indianapolis, Indiana!
