Time Varying and Multi-Phase Throughput Analysis
Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) models are generally used to describe the reliability-wise configuration of a system but they can also be used to represent the system's production/processing sequence. In such cases, we can take system analysis through RBDs a step further and utilize them to study the productivity or yield of the system via throughput analysis. This is applicable when the system can process (or make) something, such as manufacturing systems, chemical processes and oil refineries. Throughput analysis has been discussed before in this e-magazine; in this article we discuss the modeling and analysis of phased and time varying throughput with the help of BlockSim 7.

Reliability Basics

Availability and the Different Ways to Calculate It
Availability is an important metric used to assess the performance of repairable systems, accounting for both the reliability and maintainability properties of a component or system. Did you know, though, that there are different classifications of availability and different ways to calculate it? This article will explore the different availability classifications, what they mean and how they can be calculated with the help of BlockSim 7.

* Congratulations Thermo King - Thermo King Corporation, a unit of Ingersoll Rand Company Limited, recently held a special dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly renovated research and development facility at its Minneapolis headquarters. Over $5 million was put into new testing equipment and capabilities including a $2.2 million electro dynamic shaker, $1.2 million calorimeter and environmentally controlled chambers for compressor life testing, $1 million unit endurance testing cells and $300,000 environmental chambers. "Our products operate in some of the harshest and most unpredictable environments on the planet," explained Dr. Julio Pulido, Director of Global Reliability and Test Engineering. "A wide range of testing, including ultraviolet (UV) stability, corrosion resistance, temperature, humidity and vibration, plus a host of electrical and operational hazards, must be comprehensive to ensure the quality and reliability our customers have come to expect from Thermo King." Founded in 1938, Thermo King manufactures transport temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications, including trailers, truck bodies, buses, shipboard containers and railway cars. * 2007 ARS Asia Pacific - Here is a great opportunity to mingle with the growing ranks of reliability and quality professionals in the Asia Pacific arena. If you have not attended this event in the past, then we encourage you to see for yourself why it has become such a popular and important annual event. The International Applied Reliability Symposium - Asia Pacific will be held at the Orchard Hotel Singapore in Singapore on October 25 - 26, 2007. The Symposium will focus on "sharing applications, success stories and lessons learned in reliability and maintainability engineering." Fact sheets and registration information can be obtained at: http://www.ARSymposium.org/asia/.
* RENO Training Advanced probabilistic event and risk decision analysis can be a challenging undertaking for any engineering professional. Now comes an opportunity to learn how to effectively utilize the power of such analysis approaches. ReliaSoft's RENO software, combined with relevant and detailed training, offers an intuitive way to tackle a variety of complex problems using customized simulations. RS 525 -  Advanced Probabilistic Event and Risk Decision Analysis will be held on October 17 - 19, 2007 in Tucson, AZ.
