Hot Topics

Using FMEA Templates to Speed Up and Improve the Quality of FMEA or RCM Analyses
When used properly as a brainstorming tool, FMEA Templates can be very effective to reduce the time required to perform an FMEA or RCM analysis. In addition, they can provide an arguably even more important benefit by helping to improve the depth and quality of the analysis to better facilitate decision-making. This article describes how FMEA Templates can be used to speed up and improve the quality of an FMEA or RCM analysis and presents a brief summary of the ways that ReliaSoft's Xfmea, RCM++ and/or FMEA Accelerator products can be used to support such analysis techniques.

Reliability Basics

Restoration Factors in BlockSim
In repairable system maintainability and availability analysis using ReliaSoft's BlockSim software, the user is given the option to specify a restoration factor that describes the percentage to which a component will be restored after the maintenance action has been performed (repair effectiveness). This provides the ability to model maintenance using "used parts" or imperfect maintenance. This article presents a brief explanation of the two types of restoration factor available for use.

Tool Tips
  • Can I schedule different components in a repairable system to undergo maintenance at the same time in BlockSim?

  • How can custom component data be reused in Lambda Predict?

* ARS 2007 Reliability Leadership Award As part of the Applied Reliability Symposium held last month in San Diego, CA, Mr. Sharad Kumar, Senior Director of Systems Engineering for General Dynamics Land Systems, was presented with a special Reliability Leadership Award for his demonstrated leadership on the U.S. Armys Mobile Gun System (MGS) developed by General Dynamics. MGS is one of the platforms in the Stryker Family of vehicles. Mr Kumar and his team, with the help of Crow Reliability Resources and ReliaSoft Corporation, embarked on a systems engineering approach to grow the MGS reliability by almost an order of magnitude. The results have been truly remarkable and the MGS will be deployed shortly, thus giving U.S. soldiers a powerful and reliable weapon. To see photos from this year's Symposium, please visit http://www.ARSymposium.org/2007/pictures/index.htm.
Congratulations to Mr Sharad Kumar and the entire General Dynamics reliability team!
* New Reliability Course: RS 560 Introduction to Design for Reliability - Design for Reliability (DFR) brings together the entire set of methods and tools that support product and process design (during the Product Development Cycle) to ensure customer expectations for reliability are fully met. Companies are challenged to achieve uniformly high reliability in their product and process designs, while at the same time meeting shorter product development time schedules and lower budgets. This introduction to Design for Reliability covers the entire set of tools and methods that support DFR from concept through production. Topics include: overview of individual DFR methods; the proper use of tools to support DFR methods; integrating methods and tools into an effective DFR plan; application examples; common pitfalls to avoid; key elements of successful DFR programs, and more. For more information, please see http://www.ReliaSoft.com/seminars/gencourses/rs560.htm. The first class will be offered September 5 - 7, 2007 in San Diego, CA. Registration information is available at http://www.reliabilityprofessional.org/web/Dates.aspx.
* San Diego MSMT Right Around the Corner The August 27 - 31, 2007 MSMT seminar in San Diego, California is coming up soon. The course typically fills to capacity due to the popularity of the course and the popularity of the destination (who can resist San Diego in the summertime?). For those seriously considering this event, please make your reservations early to avoid scheduling issues. Online registration is available at http://www.reliabilityprofessional.org/web/Dates.aspx. You can also call our toll-free sales number: 1-888-886-0410.
