Using Weibull++ 7 and
Monte Carlo Simulation for Probabilistic Design
Probabilistic design is a
methodology aimed at producing robust and reliable products. A common mistake
made by
design engineers is not considering variations in the factors that
affect the reliability or performance of their product and instead using
only
the nominal or mean values of these factors. By understanding the
probability distributions of the design parameters, environmental usage
profile and manufacturing variations, the design engineer can design for a
specific reliability or quality level by producing designs that are robust
to variations.

Overview
of the Gumbel, Logistic, Loglogistic and Gamma Distributions
The new version of
Weibull++, version 7,
introduces four more life distributions in addition to the Weibull-Bayesian
distribution discussed in the previous
issue of
HotWire. These are the Gumbel, logistic, loglogistic and Gamma distributions. In this article, we present an overview of the new distributions
and discuss some of their characteristics and applications.

International Applied Reliability Symposium, Orlando 2006 -
Please mark your calendars and begin thinking about attending the 2006
International Applied Reliability Symposium next June in Orlando, FL.
General information is available at
http://www.arsymposium.org.
The symposium has been booked for the Sheraton World Resort, which is
walking distance from Sea World and 5 minutes away from Walt Disney
World and Universal Studios. Registrations are currently being
accepted at
http://www.arsymposium.org/register.htm.
Presentations are still being
received; however, the deadline for presentation proposal submissions
is October 31, 2005. Presentations will be accepted on the basis of
the proposal. Because of the applied nature of the Symposium,
presenters are asked to submit materials in presentation format only (i.e.
PowerPoint - see Template at
http://www.arsymposium.org/present.htm). An accompanying paper is
not required. 60 minutes have been allocated for each presentation
with 10 minutes of questions for a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes per
session. Presenters receive complimentary registration for the event.
