Hot Topics
Practice Auditing an Actual FMEA
In last month's issue of HotWire, we discussed the objectives and quality characteristics of effective FMEAs, and the procedure to audit FMEAs using the quality objectives. In this article, an actual FMEA will be evaluated using the FMEA audit procedure.

Reliability Basics
Test Design Using the Expected Failure Times Plot
In last month’s issue of HotWire, we used a new tool in Weibull++8, the Expected Failure Times plot, to get a clear view of the range of the expected failure times for two different water pump designs. In this article, we will focus on the mathematical theory behind the estimated failure times and demonstrate how the plot may be used to design reliability tests.

Tool Tips
  • How do I use ALTA 8’s Quick Parameter Estimator (QPE)?
  • In Version 8, if I have a license for both Weibull++ and ALTA, can I choose to see only the Weibull++ interface (or only the ALTA interface)?

* 2013 ARS, North America Will Be in Minneapolis! - The 2013 ARS, North America, will be held on June 5 - 7, 2013 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We are excited to return to this city, since it used to house our original sales office over 10 years ago and it brings us closer to many of the customers we have had for even longer. Please note that the deadline for submitting a presentation proposal is December 7th, 2012.
* FMEA Training with Optional Enhancement- ReliaSoft now offers the option to purchase Carl Carlson’s newly published textbook, Effective FMEAs, when you register online for our public FMEA training. Each of the modules in the course material matches the same module in Mr. Carlson's textbook. Students who wish to explore the concepts in our FMEA courses in greater detail can refer to corresponding case studies, end of chapter problems and other materials in the book for further study. The Effective FMEA Series, taught by Mr. Carlson himself, is composed of two course sessions (RS 470 & RS 471), taught over five days. RS 470 is a three-day session that provides an overview of the concepts and procedures for FMEA, FMECA and related analyses, with an emphasis on the use of ReliaSoft's Xfmea software for data management and reporting. RS 471 is a two-day session that uses case study examples to allow attendees to practice FMEA facilitation and application skills. The next public Effective FMEA Series event is scheduled for September 17 - 21, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona. For more details and registration links, see http://Seminars.ReliaSoft.com/Effective_FMEA.htm.
* Advanced System Reliability/Maintainability Analysis Training - This advanced training seminar is available only twice a year in the USA, so start planning now if Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) and/or Fault Tree Analysis techniques are important to you. Keep in mind that the new BlockSim 8 software will be used to help convey concepts, so you are sure to get into some fun and challenging coursework. RS 522 - Advanced System Reliability/Maintainability Analysis and BlockSim will be held on September 18 - 20, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona. For more details, see http://Seminars.ReliaSoft.com/gencourses/rs522.htm.
* ARS, North America 2012 Proceedings - If you were unable to attend this year, you may be pleased to learn that the 2012 ARS, North America proceedings are available for purchase online at http://www.ARSymposium.org/order.htm for only $145, plus any applicable shipping charges. Physical shipments include a spiral bound book (470 pages) and CD-ROM.
