The Parametric Models for Common Cause Failure Analysis
Common Cause Failures (CCF) occur when multiple (usually identical) components fail due to shared causes. Typical examples of shared causes include impact, vibration, temperature, contaminants, miscalibration and improper maintenance. In the September 2010 issues of HotWire, the Reliability Basics article explained how to implement the Beta factor model using the duty cycle in BlockSim. In this article, we will show how to apply these models via mirror blocks in BlockSim.

Truncation of the Integral Used in the Comparison Wizard in Weibull++
In the August 2010 issue of Hotwire, the Reliability Basics article discussed the integral used in the Weibull++ Comparison Wizard to calculate the probability that Design A will outlast Design B. This comparison is performed over the entire time domain, therefore the limits of integration are time = 0 and time = infinity. This article uses simulations in RENO to explain how changing the limits of integration affects the output of the Comparison Wizard in Weibull++.

* Congratulations to the 2011 ARS Excellent Presentation Award Winners! - Each year, engineers have the opportunity to present at one of the Applied Reliability Symposium (ARS) events held five times a year at locations around the world. One of the coveted goals for many presenters is achieving an ARS Excellent Presentation Award. The winners are selected based on votes cast by the attendees. Here are the winners from last month's event in North America:

  • Gregg Skinner and Michael Belcher (Gold Award - $1000) from the U.S. Marine Corps for their presentation, V-22 Osprey: Development to Deployment. Due to government restrictions, they donated their winnings to Hope for the Warriors (www.HopeForTheWarriors.org).
  • Harland MacKenzie (Silver Award - $750) from Dana Thermal Products for his presentation, Accelerated VA/VE Validation Testing.
  • Keyanna Qi (Bronze Award - $500) from Research Products Corporation for her presentation, Effective Reliability Testing to Drive Design Improvement.

* Department of Defense: Reliability-Related Releases - In March 2011, the Department of Defense released Directive-Type Memorandum (DTM) 11-003, Reliability Analysis, Planning, Tracking, and Reporting to strengthen current acquisition policy by requiring Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) engineering activities throughout the life cycle. It places early and continued emphasis on reliability growth management that is fully integrated across systems engineering, life cycle sustainment and test/evaluation through R&M activities. Last month the DoD updated the DoD Handbook for Reliability Growth Management, which helps to support the directive. The new MIL-HDBK-189C standard has been posted in its entirety here: http://www.weibull.com/knowledge/milhdbk.htm.
* New Papers Presented - Dr. Huairui Guo from ReliaSoft recently co-authored and presented two papers at the Seventh International Conference on Mathematical Methods in Reliability (MMR2011) in China. Here are the two papers:

  • "Failure Process Modeling For Systems With General Repairs" by Huairui Guo (ReliaSoft), Haitao Liao (University of Tennessee) and Julio Pulido (Ingersoll Rand). Presented at MMR 2011 (June 20 - 24, in Beijing, China).
  • "Modeling of Accelerated Degradation Tests with Interval Failure Time Data" by Haitao Liao (University of Tennessee) and Huairui Guo (ReliaSoft). Presented at MMR 2011 (June 20 - 24, in Beijing, China).
