RBDs and Analytical System Reliability

An overall system reliability prediction can be made by looking at the reliabilities of the components that make up the whole system or product. In this chapter, we will examine the methods of performing such calculations. The reliability-wise configuration of components must be determined beforehand. For this reason, we will first look at different component/subsystem configurations, also known as structural properties (Leemis [17]). Unless explicitly stated, the components will be assumed to be statistically independent. (Note: In the context of this reference, statistically independent implies that failure information for one component provides no information about (i.e. does not affect, other components in the system). In later sections of this on-line reference, we will explore dependency through load sharing and standby.)
