Degrees of Freedom

Degrees of freedom refer to the number of independent observations made in excess of the unknowns. If there are 3 unknowns and 7 independent observations are taken then the number of degrees of freedom is (). As another example, two parameters are needed to specify a line, therefore, there are 2 unknowns. If 10 points are available to fit the line, the number of degrees of freedom is ().
